The Importance of Positive Self-Talk
Throughout our waking hours, all of us engage in some form of self-talk. Today, people are realizing that by making a conscious effort to keep this talk positive and re-affirming, we can very easily increase our confidence and mood throughout the day.
Positive self-talk comes naturally to some, while others have to put more focus and attention towards being successful with it. This practice can expand to all areas of our lives, whether we want to be better employees, move more weight at the gym or just live happier lives. To begin improving our self-talk we must first identify the negative self-talk that is happening. This includes blaming ourselves for things out of our control, magnifying bad situations or constantly expecting the worst possible outcome.
Once we identify these areas, the next step will be to create more positive methods of thinking. For example, say you’re at a social event with some sort of game available to everyone there. You go to play and end up not doing very well, posting the worst score of the night. Driving home you are thinking about the game. You can either beat yourself up, thinking you just made a fool of yourself or you can give yourself a pat on the back for giving it a go.
Although both are somewhat accurate ways to look at the situation, one promotes misery and sadness whereas the other looks at the situation in a positive way. By making simple changes like this, we can live happier lives. The same thing can be done in the gym. Instead of thinking “I’ve never hit this weight before”, think about how well you moved that last set working up. This will give you the confidence and mindset to crush whatever weight you have on the bar.
